How to eDo it > Online Auctions > Browsing for Items

Locating Items to Bid On

Finding Items

There are two ways to find items on auction websites - browsing and searching.

Browsing is a fun way to view a sampling of the variety of items being sold on the auction site.  Visitors simply click category and subcategory titles to find items.

View eBay's Main Categories

Because there are sometimes thousands of items listed in each category (especially on eBay) it is often more efficient to search for the specific item that you are looking for.  A sample of eBay's search form is shown here.

Try it now - type a word or two in the box above.  Typing more than one term will narrow the number of items shown in your search results.

 Placing Bids

Once you've found an item your interested in you should further investigate the item before leaping into a bid.

  • Read the item description thoroughly and email any questions you may have to the seller.

  • Make sure you understand what payment options you have and who will be paying the shipping charges

  • Check out the seller by reading feedback that was left about him/her.

If, after your investigating, you decide to go ahead and bid on the item you may do so on the item description page.  On eBay the bid form is located near the bottom of the page.  Simply enter the highest amount you'll pay in the "maximum bid" box and click "review bid".  You will be prompted for your User ID and password, enter these and click the "place bid" button.  Your bid is now placed.  The bid is a proxy bid which means that it was placed with a dollar value  just above the current winning bid and will be incrementally increased (up to your maximum bid) as others bid on the item.
